About the Author:
Angelica Goodden is a Boyfriend and Tutor of St Hilda'due south Higher, Oxford. Besides equally several books on the literature and civilisation of eighteenth-century French republic, she is the author of the critically acclaimed biography of the painter Elisabeth Louise Vigee Le Brun, The Sweetness of Life.
From Booklist:
The vaults of history continue to yield riveting tales of in one case historic, then forgotten women artists, and now British biographer Goodden liberates Angelica Kauffman (1741-1807) from obscurity. Of Swiss and Austrian descent, this precocious daughter of an artist, with her ambitious father's piloting, sustained a remarkable career. Diligent, frugal, and proper, this all-work-and-no-play artist became a sensation, especially in Georgian England, painting historical and decorative works every bit well equally the portraits of kings and queens and all the stars of European society, including her allies Sir Joshua Reynolds and Goethe. Cherished for her virginal aura, Kauffman, as Goodden wittily argues, was worldly plenty to recognize that her credible unworldliness was an invaluable commodity. Goodden homes in on every irony and paradox embedded in Kauffman'southward intriguing life, which she surrounds with a vividly evoked historical and cultural context, frank aesthetic assessment of Kauffman's popular work, and one-time gossip that retains its bite. Goodden's fluent scholarship is matched by luscious prose and piquant stance, adding up to an unusually lively artist's biography. Donna Seaman
